The YÖS exam is an entrance examination for Turkish universities. It is a key requirement for admission to all fields of study in Turkish universities. To be accepted, you must pass this exam and obtain a good score. You need to apply to the university that offers this exam and where you want to study. However, there are some universities in Turkey that select their students through the SAT exam.
Some of the most important universities that do not accept students through the YÖS exam are:
- Middle East Technical University
- Koc University
- Bogazici University
- Yeditepe University
- Istanbul Technical University
- Bilkent University
- Sabanci University
- What language is the YÖS test?
The language of the YÖS exam depends on your choice. You can choose either Turkish or English, whichever is more comfortable for you. Additionally, some universities may offer the option to take the exam in languages such as French.
When will the YÖS exam be held?
Since 2012, each university has been conducting its own YÖS exam. Therefore, the YÖS exam is not a global test. Each university determines a specific time for the YÖS exam during the registration period, and you must take the exam at the university where you intend to continue your studies. You can register for this exam around February. Each university typically conducts these exams for about two months, from mid-April to early June each year. However, since 2020, when the world was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, both registration and exam dates have changed and often get postponed.

What is the score for the YÖS exam?
The YÖS exam is divided into three sections, and the total score is 100. Most universities deduct one-fourth of a point for each incorrect answer, meaning that four incorrect answers result in one point deduction from your total score.
For university admissions, the total score obtained from these three sections should not be less than 50, and scores below 50 are usually not accepted. However, as mentioned, achieving a score of 100 is not impossible since the questions are predictable. To be accepted into top Turkish universities , set your goal to obtain a score higher than 90. However, you should not overlook the intense competition in some universities such as Istanbul University. In some Turkish state universities, due to fierce competition among applicants, other factors such as high school grades or other academic credentials play an important role in university admissions.
YÖS exam questions.
The first requirement for success in any exam is to have accurate information about it, such as the exam score, the fields of study, it covers, and the required scores for acceptance.
The YÖS exam consists of a total of 80 to 100 questions, which are drawn from three subjects : Mathematics, Engineering, and Verbal Aptitude.
1. IQ questions (general ability questions, Intelligence Questions):
The number of questions in the IQ questions section is usually the highest and comprises approximately half of the total questions (around 45 to 55 questions). Contrary to the name of this section, solving these questions doesn’t require a high level of intelligence, as they can be easily answered through repetition and practice by anyone with average intelligence.
2. Mathematics Questions:
The next section is related to mathematics questions, which consists of 30 questions. If the total number of questions is 100, the number of questions in this section increases to 45.
The questions in this section cover basic mathematics topics, starting from functions, trigonometry, and logarithms, and concluding with derivatives and integrals. All these topics are covered during high school.
3. Geometry Questions:
The number of questions in this section ranges from 5 to 10. The topics covered include fundamental principles of geometry, such as angles, circles, triangles, similarity of triangles, spatial geometry, and more.
